WALCOTT BENCHED FOR BIG VILLA DEFEAT

Theo Walcott spent the entire game on the substitutes’ bench as he watched his Southampton side suffer a big defeat at the hands of hosts Aston Villa in a Premier League encounter played at Villa Park last week Saturday. Theo Walcott and his Southampton teammates came into the game as one of the form teams in the Premier League only for them to record their biggest defeat of the season. They were thrashed 4-0 by a rejuvenated Aston Villa side managed by Liverpool legend Steven Gerrard.

Southampton came into the game with a seven-game unbeaten in all competitions including five games in the Premier League. The other two games were in the FA Cup on the way to the quarterfinals where they will face a tough opponent in Manchester City. Their last defeat before the Villa game came against Wolverhampton Wanderers away from home. Hosts Wolves were able to complete a league double over Southampton thanks to a 3-1 defeat. The Saints went on the abovementioned unbeaten run afterwards.

Aston Villa got off to a bright start inside nine minutes when England international Ollie Watkins gave them the lead off the assist from strike partner Danny Ings. Brazilian international Douglas Luiz put Villa in a very good position for the three points when he scored from close range with a minute left on the clock in the first half. Goals from Watkins and Luiz gave Aston Villa a 2-0 advantage at the interval and they doubled that advantage in the second half on the way to am emphatic win over the Saints. Coutinho and the impressive Ings were the goalscorers for Villa in the second half with both goals coming in two minutes at the start of the half.
Theo Walcott and his Southampton colleagues would be hoping to bounce back from that defeat when they play hosts to Newcastle United at the St. Mary's Stadium on Thursday in a rescheduled game.
